MALKA SIMA is a small-batch indie niche perfume house based in Portland, OR. The nose and author of this line is Max Turk. She compounds and bottles everything by hand, in house.

This is a question that involves a full course in chemistry, but the short answer is that while our approach to fine fragrance formulation is a product of years in apothecary work and appreciation of the natural world, the individual aroma molecules used in the compounds are not always “natural.”

This is for a number of reasons, most important of which: natural raw materials aren’t always the safest. Potential allergens often most heavily naturally occur in materials like essential oils and absolutes. Therefore, we utilize careful attention to these formulas- emphasizing natural raw materials and letting them shine, while supporting them with others.

As a fine-fragrance house, we appreciate the range of raw materials available, and use them to optimize depth and complexity to our perfumes. We are IFRA compliant, ensuring our formulas adhere to the strict guidelines of this international body, which is consistently researching and updating the safest levels of all materials.

The Discovery Set is our way of giving you a chance to try your choice of 6 perfumes. You may configure your choice of 6 however you’d like- a mix of all different scents, or multiples of some.  And if you fall in love with a fragrance before its full-sized bottle is released, a full set of 6 samples can tide you over.

Yes, 11 is a lot! Our line is comprised of two categories: what we call the “photorealistics” and the “abstracts.”

Photorealistic perfumes are to allow you to smell your favorite flower/plant all year round- beyond their blooming season. Instead of having them be a note in a broader formula where they often get lost, we wanted to make these botanicals the star of the show. Don’t let their single-name fool you. These are complex, beautiful, and wearable on their own. They are Violet, Lilac, Rose, Jasmine, Tomato, & Orange Blossom.

The other half of the line are perfumes that are more typical to the art of perfumery. We recommend choosing a mix of both! Or, you may order 2 Discovery Sets and try them all. 

We’re so happy that you love these scents! Beginning with Violet, Ethos of Eros, and Violet on our launch day in early May 2026, we’re continuing a staggered-release schedule for the rest of the full-sized bottles. You can see the estimated release date for each of the 11 fragrances in the Discovery Set listing.

We love to hear it! For now we offer just one full-sized bottle option. This helps with inventory management as a new brand. We will consider all feedback from you and perhaps larger bottles will come down the line.

We generally ship orders out on Friday, Saturday, and Wednesday. When you place your order it goes into the queue, and our goal is to get your order out as soon as possible. Full-sized bottles are ready to ship, Discovery Sets are customized to your preference so they may take a little extra time.

Perfumes must be shipped via ground-shipping, so please plan in advance if you have an occasion you’re ordering for.

If there is a time sensitivity, feel free to reach out and we will do our best to accommodate you on our end, but bear in mind that once the order is out of our shop, it’s in the hands of the shipping service selected.

If you are here in Portland, you are welcome to choose local pickup to cut down on the fulfillment and shipping time.

We do not accept any returns/exchanges. This is a small-batch operation and all sales are final. We strongly encourage ordering Discovery Sets to try the scents out before committing to a full-sized bottle. If there is something wrong with your order that was our fault, please reach out and we will assist you. 

Due to the complicated systems relating to fragrance and shipping, we are not yet offering international shipping. We hope to sometime in the future!
